MHA is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented hands-on Controller to join our in-person team in Montclair, NJ and serve as a strategic partner to the CFO. This key role ensures financial transparency, accurate and timely financial reporting, with a focus on government contracts, billing/ revenue processes, and program-level reporting for a 501(c)(3) corporation with a $29 million budget. The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical skills and experience in nonprofit financial management, particularly with state and county funding grant compliance.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting (CPA preferred).
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in nonprofit accounting and financial management.
  • Experience with government contracts and grant reporting is strongly preferred. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with accounting software. Experience with Traverse and Excel is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills. 

Responsibilities:   

  • Assist with monthly and year-end close, including preparation of timely and accurate account reconciliations. 
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly journal entries. 
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit-specific regulations. 
  • Assist with reporting for state contracts and county grants, including budget preparation and compliance. 
  • Oversee and review weekly billing/ revenue reconciliations and generate associated reports for management, including resolving any related issues. 
  • Review monthly reconciliations and reporting for all billing/ revenue related accounts for accuracy and completion. 
  • Generate monthly profit & loss (P&L) reports for fee-for-service and deficit-funded programs. 
  • Assist the CFO with the annual financial audit. 
Annual Base Salary: $95K - 110K 

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer
